Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Head of Claims Operations in our Claims Team in Continental Europe.

Reporting directly to the Head of Claims Continental Europe, the role will be responsible for developing and managing all aspects of claims operations in effective and scalable manner as the company grows throughout Europe. The successful applicant will be required to deliver a high level of customer satisfaction in a robust control environment, providing a positive claims experience through the implementation of functioning claims processes.

Candidates should be able to provide in-depth process analysis and translate it to successful claims process design, control and steer development of claims related systems and tools, reporting capabilities and compliance framework in a timely and professional manner, working alongside with Operational areas, looking for synergies and efficiency.

The role requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills as the candidate will be expected to liaise with various stakeholders within Claims, and other areas of the business-like Underwriting, Finance, Delegated Authority and TPA, Audit, IT in addition to senior management across the company. They will need to be able to demonstrate a strong track record of hands-on development of claims processes and will be part of an innovative team with a diverse set of responsibilities as would be expected of someone in a senior role. This role will provide the candidate with an exciting opportunity to develop a market leading claims function.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working closely with the Head of Claims Continental Europe, and Heads of Claims in European countries the candidate will take a leading role in building up a functioning structure for Claims Operations throughout the Continent to ensure preparation of necessary claims processes.
  • Working closely with the Head of Delegated Authority and Operational Hubs to ensure an integrated and efficient process design and implementation, aiming for maximum efficiency
  • Development, management and guidance to Claims Operations Hubs in Barcelona and Cologne
  • Governance and Control: Ensuring proper compilation and adherence to existing procedures and standards incl. the Claims Handling Manual and support to the Compliance, Internal Audit and Risk Management to ensure good practice is enshrined in the working processes of the claims’ teams contemplating SOX and financial controls, Sanctions, Financial Crime, GDPR, DORA, Conduct Risk, Large Loss Reporting and any evolving good practices and formal regulatory changes
  • Production of claims reports and management information including for Board Meetings and Operations Committees, audit and regulatory bodies
  • Measuring and monitoring KPIs relating to processing timeliness, data quality, trends, best practices and claims costs
  • Viewing data as a key asset to the organization and actively reviewing and resolving data issues
  • Driving digital change and modern solutions to decrease manual processing. Drive implementation of modern solutions including automation and AI
  • Being the Product Owner for streamlining changes requests to IT regarding the claims legacy system used in the Region and for overseeing a broader technological landscape for Claims in co-operation with the Head of Technology and IT
  • Develop and arrange training sessions for systems in use for both employees and TPAs
  • Participating as a senior leader in the wider global Sompo claims team
  • Mentoring and training more junior members of the team
  • Working in collaboration with the leads of each function ensuring the claims function forms a close symbiotic working relationship across the company.

What you’ll bring:

  • A holistic understanding of claims processes and the requirements of the claims teams in corporate insurance
  • A credible market presence and reputation with a proven record of having successfully delivered a claims promise to the market
  • Outstanding effectiveness in implementing change
  • Experience with the TPA related processes
  • Educated to degree level
  • Demonstrated track record of people management
  • Business and Process analysis experience (e.g. Lean/ 6-Sigma, Continuous Improvement system or equivalent)
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and communication skills
  • Agility through strong prioritization and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of insurance/reinsurance accounting of advantage
  • Excellent written and verbal English
  • Knowledge of Spanish, German, French or Italian of advantage
